SURVEY OF HATCH DEFLECTION

Project Summary

In April 2010, the captain of the relatively new bulk carrier CIELO DI TOKYO became concerned about a relative 18 mm deflection of one of its ship's hatch covers, after loading some yachts in Ensenada. A survey showed that the seal between the hatches was in good order and the seam was still watertight. An on-site calculation showed that the concentrated weight of the loaded yachts could not be the cause of this deflection. Instead, the deflection was likely either casued by a previous (excessive) deck load, or built in at the shipyard during construction.

■	On site survey of the hatches, seals and coamings;
■	Calculate the total deck load on the hatch cross beam;
■	Compare the calculated total deck load with the design load of the green water on the hatch cover;
■	Verify the support and lashing concept of the yachts.
