MATSON CRANE RELOCATIONProject SummaryTwo of the older Matson Paceco cranes were relocated from Oakland, CA, to Sand Island in Hawaii in August 2002. Both cranes were loaded onto a single ocean going barge Z BIG 1 by rolling them on using multi-wheel trailers and a special lift frame. Propulsion was provided by two hydraulic winches, while a heavy truck acted as a brake. Steel bridge pieces spanned the gap between the barge stern and the quay. After loading, the cranes were secured to the barge deck, and the tow departed. Upon arrival of the tow in Hawaii, the seafastenings were removed and the cranes were safely rolled off the barge and set onto their rails at the new pier.Scope of WorkThe project scope included:
|
■ | Determine design environmental criteria for the tow; |
■ | Modeling of the barge hull for the motion response and ballast analysis; |
■ | Calculate the design barge motions and resulting inertia loads on the cranes; |
■ | Simulation of the crane roll-on and roll-off operations and optimization of ballast procedures. |
