TRANSPORT OF 8 RTGS TO ELIZABETHProject SummaryLate November 2023, a total of 8 used rubber tire gantry (RTG) cranes were loaded onto the barge FOSS 3612 at the APM Terminal in San Pedro, CA. The RTGs were rolled on over the barge side using steel Ro/Ro ramps. Once on deck, the RTGs were rolled into their final position, to be seafastened. Seafastening consisted of roll bars on the outside and lashing wires on the inside. The head blocks with spreaders were lowered down to the deck and secured. Once all seafastening was completed, the tow departed with destination Panama Canal, where it waited in the long qeue due to the drought limitations at the Canal. After some delays, the Panama Canal was successfully passed and the tow continued on to the final destination: Elizabeth, NJ. Upon arrival at the Elizabeth APM Terminal, all seafastenings and lashings were removed, the spreaders hoisted back up, and the RTGs were rolled off over the barge side, using the same Ro/Ro ramps, in coordination with the local tide.
