INSTALLATION SAN JOAQUIN PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

Project Summary

Using a Manitowoc 888 Series 2 crawler crane on a 210 x 54 x 13.5 ft cargo barge, a new pedestrian bridge was installed over the San Joaquin River in September 2004. The crawler crane was first rolled onto the barge, after which it picked the bridge in 3 separate sections from the shore for assembly into a single 200 ft long piece on the side of the barge. After assembly, the barge with crane and bridge was maneuvered into place. The complete 100 t bridge section was then lifted up and rotated until is was over its end supports and installed. During the crane rotation, the barge was ballasted to limit its list. Because of the poor condition of the barge, heavy steel beams were used to support the crawler crane.
